Warren Pettee Selected as Charlotte Research Scholar

Warren Pettee, a junior in the Meteorology program, was one of 54 UNC Charlotte undergraduates competitively selected from a pool of 150 applicants to be a 2014 Charlotte Research Scholar. Warren will be working on a project that incorporates data from the updated weather station on the roof of McEniry into an active display in the new Meteorology display case on the 1st floor. The project requires a combination of meteorology, technical, and computer science skills. This display case project will show weather information, and can be viewed by everyone who visits McEniry. Eventually, the weather information will be incorporated onto the web as well. Warren will take this work a step further and develop a protocol to systematically run model simulations to output computer forecasts using computers in McEniry. His model output will be a part of the display, and he will also use the weather model to study how well past weather events (like the snow event earlier in the year) can be forecast. Warren will work with faculty mentors Profs. Matt Eastin and Brian Magi on his project. He will present his results at a Summer Research Symposium on July 23 at the Student Union, and, in addition to direct research experience, Warren will attend weekly professional development seminars throughout the summer as a part of the CRS program.
